Happy Mother’s Day! We are in the Battleground series,
and in honor of Mother’s Day I had it on my heart to go a
certain direction today, Judges 4; Momma Deb
• In the time of the judges, following Joshua’s death
and before the days of king Saul, Isreal was ruled by
judges, you might say, “prophet-judges”
• Often these individuals had encounters with God,
would lead the people into battle, and daily judge
over the affairs of the nation… the judges were
God’s prophetic voice, leadership to the nation, they
were not perfect people, but used by God to lead
• Judges covers a 330-year time frame, written by the
prophet Samuel generally believed, it is a dark time
in Israel’s history of turning and returning to God
2
Judges 4:1–4 (NKJV) When Ehud (previous judge) was dead, the children of
Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD.
2
So the LORD sold them into the hand
of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. The commander of his army was
Sisera, who dwelt in Harosheth Hagoyim.
3
And the children of Israel cried out to
the LORD; for Jabin had nine hundred chariots of iron, and for twenty years he had
harshly oppressed the children of Israel.
4
Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of
Lapidoth, was judging Israel at that time.
Because Israel did evil, the Promised Land they were
living in was no longer under their control; Jabin, king of
Canaan; Jabin – “Intellectual”; Canaan – Promise Land;
Hazor, town northeast of the sea of Galilee; Hazor –
“surrounded with a stockade”; fortress, stronghold
“A way of thinking made stronghold inside the land of
promise”… Christ in you is the promise land
• For 20 years this enemy had established himself and
was very strong and intimidating… ever have a way
of thinking that’s held you captive for 20 years?
• Now enters Deborah, a prophetess, wife, and judge
Deborah – “honeybee”; root form, Dabar: to arrange, to
speak, answer, appoint, command, declare, destroy,
name, be a spokesman
Who appointed this married woman to judge Israel? God
